What is Classical Theatre Training?

The key difference between classical theatre training and method acting lies in their approach to performance, emotional preparation, and the actor’s relationship with the text.

Approach to Character and Emotion

Classical Theatre Training: Focuses on external techniques such as voice, movement, and text analysis. Actors study the script deeply and use formalized techniques to embody a character.

Use of Text

In Classical Theatre Training: the text is paramount. Actors adhere strictly to the playwright’s words, structure, and rhythm (especially in Shakespearean or poetic works). Techniques like scansion, rhetoric, and verse speaking help actors interpret and perform with precision.

Emotional Preparation

In Classical Theatre Training emotions are shaped through physicality, vocal modulation, and an understanding of character objectives. Actors don’t necessarily need to feel emotions personally; they use external tools to create the illusion.

Physical and Vocal Training

Classical Theatre Training emphasizes voice projection, diction, movement, and stage presence to suit large theatres and poetic texts.

Performance Style

Classical Theatre performance is theatrical, heightened, and formal. Actors adjust to different periods and styles (e.g., Greek tragedy, Shakespeare, Restoration comedy).
